Home treatment for an injured knee.?

Q: My cousin fell over something and hit her knee in the parking lot. Her knee doesn't show any swelling. It's scraped a bit. She can't bear weight on it. Says putting ice on it makes it hurt really bad. Does anyone have any suggestions for treating this at home?

A: Ice is more for swelling, actually heat will help loosen it up and make it feel a bit better. I would get a hand towel, run it under hot water (not scalding) and lay that across it. Aspirin will help with swelling and a good general pain reliever. Give it a little time, if she still has extreme pain or anything looks broken, take her to the doc. Heat works best for strain/sprain or general athletic type injury. I hope it helps!
