I cut my finger badly with a knife about a month ago. It isn't healing properly. Should I have it amputated?

Q: About four weeks ago I was cutting vegetables and I accidentally sliced into my right pinky finger just below the second joint. I had it cleaned and bandaged, but it has since gotten infected - quite badly. It smells and it's purple. I have been to the doctors and they said that if it doesn't improve soon, I may need to consider getting it amputated maybe at the first joint. I'm not too concerned about this because it's only a pinky, but will it be obvious to others? and will it hinder my ability to pick up smaller objects? Unfortunately today I went back to the doctors and he told me the finger will need to be chopped off at the first joint. I'm not too worried, but obviously I'd have hoped for more positive news.

A: You probably should have seen a doctor right after you cut it if it was a really deep cut. If your doctor says you have to have it amputated, you might have to unless you can talk to him about a different way to treat it (i don't know of any). Having a missing pinky probably isn't going to affect your life too much. In fact, it would be an interesting conversation starter. If you play an instrument, you might have an issue though.
